Historically, in India, Khadi has been a symbol of economic self-sufficiency
and self-reliance resuscitated from near extinction by the Swadesi Movement. When asked what khadi is, many people, if not most will be able to identify that it is a handwoven textile using hand spun yarns however very few people would know that for instance there are several different ways to spin yarn and depending on the technique, the resultant yarn has vastly different characteristics.
The Peticharkha, or the box charkha, is one such device. It’s compact, its easy to transport, and perfect for women in households with spatial restrictions. The downside however is that, it is much more labour intensive as a process although the resultant textile has unmatched durability and tenacity.
It is also largely unknown that for a textile to be characterised as khadi, it does not need to be organically grown. The Tula Peticharkha is made with rain-fed, organic yarns, that are naturally dyed using Madder and Indigo dyes respectively. For the conscientious buyer, these throws may appear red and blue, but they’re green as green can be.
